Scaling and Root Planning

Preventive Dentistry

Scaling is the routine process of removing plaque from your teeth and gumline during your regular cleaning appointment. If you have symptoms of gum disease, we may recommend a deeper type of cleaning called scaling and root planing. In this instance, we may administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. The process involves thoroughly removing (scaling) all plaque and tartar from your teeth and root surfaces, then smoothing your roots (planing) to prevent plaque and tartar from re-adhering, giving your gums their best chance to heal.  The good news is that this is a non-surgical intervention that can help reverse the early signs of gum (periodontal) disease.
